NEXT LEVEL TECH NxLT ETHER

Interconnects

The ETHERs come in aluminium case, and they seem to be well-made, although they did not sport any striking visual elements that would scream “Look at me, I am a high-end cable”. For sure, the visual understatement makes them more affordable than cables wrapped in brocade or with carbon and gold elements attached to them. Notwithstanding the looks, they sound terrific and are great bang for the buck.

With the nightingale logo, the Next Level Tech – alike many audio cable entrepreneurships – is a one man show. Obviously, Next Level Tech does not mine copper, neither it draws the wires, but – unlike many competitors – the entire supply chain is actually overseen by the company which makes the NxLT approach quite unique. The cables start as raw red copper ingots sourced directly from the refinery, then this material is drawn and rolled in a specialized German mill under an exclusive contract and according to Next Level Tech’s specifications. Thus, the final wires have proprietary physiochemical properties that guarantee the result and also that identical wires cannot be get from anywhere else. A boutique manufacturer like Next Level Tech must therefore make bold moves, as minimum contractable quantities start at 10 kilometres of the wire per order. If you start purchasing such quantities, you certainly must be very serious about the business.

Strictly speaking, red copper contains oxygen and is known as oxygen copper, hence the reddish colour. Next Level Tech claims the ETHER uses cold-drawn oxygen-free red copper, two runs of the conductor per pin, that is then cryo-treated in two steps. That’s for metallurgy. Each cable is shielded by several layers of copper mesh (5 layers in XLR, 4 layers in RCA), and polypropylene dielectric is used throughout it.

Big attention is paid to mechanical damping and tuning, including how the conductors are laid out, how the shielding mesh is tensioned, and how long the internal structures are. I believe this may contribute significantly to how the ETHER performs; in my experience, it is equally important as the metal or its crystalline structure.

The NxLT ETHER signal cable is available in a balanced XLR as well as in a single-ended RCA version. I had both versions on hand, which made listening tests in different environments possible. Audiophiles take superiority of XLR as granted, yet it is not that easy. In properly designed single-ended signal paths, audio signal passes through less complicated circuitry which means purer travel with less chance that something harms it. But there are also those mysterious cases, like my own TAD M2500 power amplifier which is a balanced device from inputs to outputs and yet it sounds much (much!) better with the signal routed through its RCA inputs, no matter which preamp or source component I use.

Back to the ETHERs. Next Level Tech uses Oyaide connectors with their special locking XLR mechanism, and with very tightly fitting RCAs – once connected, they stay put as if welded. After testing them in several audio constellations and against quite a challenging bunch of competitors, they behaved remarkably consistently. I mean they brought the same improvements (and trade-offs) in each system I tested them in, just the intensity of them varied a bit, but not too much. Instead of randomness, trial and error, and hoping a pair of interconnects will match, they are a reliable tool that behaves predictably and is easy to transfer from system to system. I my own setup, I connected them and let them settle for 5 days with music, that is 100+ hours on top of the manufacturer’s break-in process.

Exceptional cleanliness was by far the most profound feature of the ETHER. I try to avoid the word “clarity”, because clarity may often be associated with harshness, brightness, thinness, and generally overexposed sound. None of it the ETHER was. It was clean and relaxed, clean and full, clean and very well balanced and open. In that respect, the performance of the ETHER was at around in the same league with AudioQuest Dragon (10k€/1m pair). The tranquillity of the background let the voices and instruments blossom in wonderful contrast against the backdrop. The sound was stable and firm across the whole audioband, no splashing at certain frequencies, no prioritization of lows, mids, or highs. When I listened to my usual playlist (which means listening to silver discs, rather than clicking on tracks on a tablet’s screen), it soon struck me that my listening sessions were much longer than usual, whole albums instead of songs, often late into the night. I could not do that with the Dragon. Although I marvelled in the superbly clean and clear sound with the Audioquest, it became a bit fatiguing over time, with maybe too much top end energy in it. In the very same system, I lived with Nordost Valhalla 2 for two weeks (7.3k€ in 2019 and 10.0k€ in 2023 for 1m pair). The V2 was smidgen more vivid and euphonic than the Dragon, but also less fatiguing. The ETHER beat them both. It was the most balanced, the most fidelity of the three, at least as tonality is concerned.

I challenged the NxLT ETHER with my resident Ansuz C2 interconnect (4k€ in 2021, now replaced in Ansuz´s line up by an upgraded C3 version at marginally higher price). The ETHER had a very similar level of control over the sound, and it was no less dynamic. The C2 provided fuller mid-bass, which brought vocalists forward and made them a bit more physical in the mix. However, I must admit that the ETHER did not attempt to beautify the sound, it was more honest, and therefore compatible with higher number of recordings. While the C2 was largely dependant on how bass was mixed/mastered on an album, the ETHER was not discriminating.

Alike in a direct comparison with Synergistic Research SRX (12.5k€), the NxLT offered remarkably solid bass in 70’s rock (Nazareth), with punchy kick drum and deeply growling electric bass. All instruments in the mix were perfectly outlined and separated from each other, the guitars were biting, the piano was sound, and I could hear into how the multitrack recording had been layered. Now, the NxLT ETHER is 3.1k€ (2.6k€ in the RCA version), so one can assume it is a killer of the killers. Well, not quite. There is one trade-off.

The separation as if went a little bit further than necessary in the ETHER. In the tranquil backdrop that I mentioned earlier, as if the subtlest sounds got drowned. These “subtlest sounds”, in the context of a high-resolution playback system, include ambient sounds, recording booth reverberation, or a fly circling around the microphone, who somehow had found its way into the beautiful acoustic guitar playing of Marco Carulli in Francisco Tárrega‘s Capricho Árabe for STS Digital and had become the part of it for ever. The result is that – although the individual performers in recordings are each vivid and perfectly outlined, the whole ensemble feels like a collection of individual players, rather than a group. As if the communication glue between the performers was missing and they played in isolation. Spatially, the less obvious ambient information also led to a sort of front-to-back compression, so the soundstage was less deep than I was used to. It will probably remain unnoticed in genres where such nuances do not exist by the very nature of recording techniques, like in electronic music, and pop. I would like to know how e.g. replacing the connectors with a different make would change how the ETHER performs. Isolating an issue and removing it usually asks for compromises elsewhere and – mostly – other trade-offs appear. Not many signal cables are complete in how they sound, tonally and spatially, and hence their price tags.

Now I realize that my conclusions are partially contradicting observations in other published reviews (1,2) of the ETHER. Although it may be a result of different benchmarks and certainly different preferences, it underlines the importance of a personal experience that cannot be transferred. In high-end, there is no one universal truth, nor a product that would universally appeal to everyone.

Before I commenced with the review, I offered the designer of the ETHER, Next Level Tech’s Robert Słowiński, the usual Audiodrom deal: Either I will like the cables and the review will proceed, or I won’t and the cables will be returned to the sender without me spending time on them. He agreed and I am happy that he did. For all but the most nitpicking listeners (and reviewers) the NxLT ETHER will be a go-to signal cable, as for the fraction of the cost of other high-end esoterica it peeks into the realms of performance that very few achieve. I will keep my eye on the future Next Level Tech innovations – should they decide to build an ultimate cable I will queue up for it.

P.S. Next Level Tech provided also a pair of NxLT ETHER speaker cables (€4000/2.0m set) and they were at least as good as the interconnects. Although this review concentrates purely on the signal cables in otherwise non-NxLT playback chains, wiring the whole system with ETHERs may result in remarkable synergies.
