Should I characterize the Eonix by one attribute, I would say it is a radiant loudspeaker cable. It is a cable good for golden hours, sunsets, whiskies in a jar and aged rum collections, candlelit dinners, and – most importantly – for comfort and joy.

Serbian Velikinac is a family business with a small but growing portfolio of loudspeakers, electronics, and audiocabels. After auditioning their Velikinac Audio Lab Synapse signal cables and flagship Fidelity Limited speaker cables, I decided to try the Eonix model. Velikinac is not particularly consistent in its approach to the technical solutions used in individual models, so each model line is a kind of unique.

In the case of the Eonix speaker cable, this means two separate wires for the positive and negative parts of the signal, in a standard black braid, loosely twisted in a predefined spiral twist. The cables are secured in their positions by cherry wood figure-eight cut-outs and wooden splitters. The company also mills the connector bodies from the same cherry wood. The insides, banana plugs, and conductors are made of copper of local – i.e., Serbian – origin.

Although such a design approach may seem outdated, even ultra-high-end brands have recently been moving away from solid metal terminals to thin-walled constructions made of copper, wood, or plastic. The reason is simple: less hysteresis and energy accumulation, and better resonance behavior. Similarly, the transformation is happening with banana plugs – no springs or solid pins, just twisted thin copper or silver sheet metal for low mass. So, although Velikinac Audio Lab's approach may seem "not CNC enough," it makes sense and my listening tests prove it.

The Velikinac Eonix performed beautifully on Popsicle Toes of Diana Krall (from her When I Look In Your Eyes album). It offered similarly melodic and open sound, like Cardas Clear, for example, with the difference that the Eonix approaches the musical material with an even warmer color palette. It provides a wealth of detail, beautiful decays, and very nicely tuned bass spectrum, which combines volume, power, and texture in a practically ideal balance. It also has a knack for making the reproduction more seductive in a way, so even though When I Look In Your Eyes doesn't sport any particular audiophile ambitions, not even in DSD, I enjoyed how it sounded through the Eonix. The sound was comfortably rich and colorful and had a certain warmth to it, but it didn't lack detail and resolution, so the overall impression was pleasantly luxurious. In I've Got You Under My Skin, Eonix also offers a glimpse of the percussiveness of the piano hammers, and although everything here is also embellished with gold dust, it is still an above-average performance within the price category.

Warmth and radiance usually go hand in hand with transient behaviour and phase shifts, which is also evident here. The strings of the acoustic guitar seem thicker, their plucked attack is more rounded, not as accurate as I am used to, and the background of the recording is also more viscous and denser. The lowered center of gravity shifts the Spanish guitar in Alpujarra flamenco piece (Naim The Hi-Fi Collection sampler) almost to a different key. The dance of the fingers on the strings is presented more heavy-handed and bathed in the evening sun. To be clear: this is not a bad thing at all, it has a "triode" effect to it and the result is much more enjoyable than the bleached-out sound of some wannabe high-end cables.

That said, the Velikinac Eonix has its own character and as such it will be a compensating element in audio set-ups, helping you move the tonal balance in a desired direction. As mentioned, the cable positive and negative lead are separated, and its geometry is predefined by the cut-out wooden bridge. This means that is not strictly fixed as the leads can move in relation to each other, and depending how the cable will be coiled and arranged behind the rack and speakers, its inductance and capacitance values will fluctuate. You can use it to a good effect and “tune” the sound of the cable by it – not maybe by the extent of Van den Hul The Revolution that provides complete separation of its positive and negative leads, but still.

Sometimes there are situations where Eonix hits the mark with the music (for example, aforementioned Diana Krall and other jazz pieces sounded really great through it), but other times it's less successful, such as when the electric bass in Nazareth (Telegram) lost some of its deep "growl" in favor of deep "roundness" of tone. If your sound benchmark is analog playback, in the sense of sound that embraces you rather than jumps out at you, and if your listening tastes lean toward 70s and 80s rock, hard rock, and metal, then definitely organize a loan of the Eonix and give it a listen. It's quite possible that it will make you want to go through all your recordings again.

The Eonix is the most affordable member of the Velikinac Audio Lab speaker cable family and, at €6,480, occupies the most attractive segment of the market. In this price category, buyers certainly do not expect basic entry level performance or the highest quality cable; this is a segment where real value products can be found and where you will find such stalwarts as AudioQuest Robin Hood, Cardas Audio Clear, and Kubala-Sosna Emotion.

Although Eonix may not be THE speaker cable for everyone, I personally really liked it because it brings music back to its essence, to hours spent in the company of your favorite artists. It's the type of cable that makes you want to listen to everything and doesn't force you to sort your recordings into listenable and unlistenable. Although Velikinac Audio Lab is a virtually an unknown brand, it is an successful alternative to established players on the market, many of which it outperforms.
