Floorstanding loudspeakers
Have you ever noticed how much people cough during classical or acoustic jazz concerts? each and every silent section or break is populated by coughing people no matter where the perfromance takes place. The coughing in A Case of You was very real sounding, through the Dynaudio DM 3/7 - just like somebody was coughing in your room.
Function and form
The Dynaudio DM 3/7 is a two-way speaker: one tweeter and two midrange-bass drivers. The tweeter is rather typical 28mm impregnated fabric thing, the other drivers have MSP (magnesium-silicate-polymer) cones and 3" aluminum voice coils cooled by ferrofluid.
The DM 3/7s look like any other ordinar speaker. The craftsmanship is industrially perfect, the finish is achieved by a selection of veneer imitations - rosewood look particularly good on them. Dynaudios do not support bi-wiring.
Bass management
The bass of the Dynaudio DM 3/7 is very unobtrusive, almost discreete in its nature. It does not mean it is lean, just it is not big and flashy. I prefer this type of presentation to showing off as the low frequency rumbling does not cover the more important midrange.
Clarity & delicacy
On top of this, if I consider that the DM3/7s are budget speakers, there is nothing to complain about. I used my ATB PC PRo set to check the bass response up to 200Hz in my room and the speakers were virtually flat from 50Hz. Below this point the roll off is measurable (and audible), with -6dB at 40Hz which is what Dynaudio specifies. It is remarkable performance from the cheap speaker.
Tonal accuracy
The highs of the DM 3/7 are typical Dynaudio: understated, softly resolving, liquid and perfectly blended with the midrange. There was a small lift at 3kHz which made a guitar more present and resulted into small vocal stringency.
Spatial resolution
In two typical jazz numbers Fly Me to The Moon and A Case of You (Diana Krall) the DM 3/7s exhibited on cymbals that had no plastic or metallic colouration, rather they were metallic and shiny, with proper body and decay. The Dynaudios got the timbre quite right - I missed a bit richer (warmer if you want) midrange, more life to it.
