SONY SS-AR1

Floorstanding loudspeakers

Sony helped to create an audio tape. They gave birth to walkman. They revolutionarized red-book format and digitalized tape recording into the MiniDisc. They had started the battle for a higher resolution and won it with the SACD launch. There is no other company in the entire audio business that could boast of such milestone advancements. The SS-AR1´s are, first of all, very beautiful speakers. Not in a flamboyant way – there are no unusual drivers, exotic cabinets, tons of diamonds... nothing like that. Rather the SS-AR1 are very classical, however, you feel and know they are exquisite in their own way.

Both the cabinets and baffles of the 105cm tall speakers are gently curved to minimize standing waves formation and diffraction at the edges that may affect imaging precision and timbre coloration. Other than that the cabinets are classically rectangular with the footprint of 32x49cm. Each speaker sits on four small feet that add another 3 centimeters to its height. Moving the SS-AR1 around is not an easy job as they are 57kg each. The maple wood that was selected for the baffle board is laminated in layers to achieve the final compressed thickness of 50mm and then precisely machined. A similar approach was applied to the rest of enclosure that is built from birch, selected for its good reverberation behaviour. Like the maple the birch is also laminated in sheets to reach 32mm thickness.

After experimenting with many sorts of internal bracing (including metallic frames) the SS-AR1s ended up with a simple yet effective solution: the enclosure is at approximately 1/3 of its height partitioned by two thick birch pieces that are separated by an air cavity, not unlike a double window pane, thus creating two isolated sub-enclosures, one for woofers, the other for the midrange and tweeter. Both chambers are vented with bass reflex ports. Apart from this partitioning the rest of the cabinet is just simply braced with another 7 braces. Taking into consideration the minimalistic solution that was applied the result is very impressive – try and knock on the wood of the assembled cabinets and you will end up with sore knuckles.

At Munich High End Show Sony showed the SS-AR1s disassembled. It was stunning how precisely their individual parts were made. At the show the speakers appeared to be in black piano gloss to me, however, it was only during my review when I learnt they were actually stained in deep brown. Depending on the time of a day and the way light hit their surface the appearance of the Sonys varied from black to rich reddish brown, sometimes showing subtleties of the wood grain, sometimes looking velvety uniform. The SS-AR1s are probably the best finished speakers I’ve encountered in my entire audio life. Sony also provides a cleaning cloth with speakers to keep the look flawless. I only have minor quibbles: the metal pieces that hold grilles in place protrude from the baffle – I would prefer some less visible solution, and the drivers are mounted into the baffle with perhaps too many visible screws. Here the industrialism oposes the beauty and art.

The Sony SS-AR1 is a three-way speaker with two 200mm woofers, one 130mm midrange driver and a 25mm tweeter. All the units were sourced from and adapted by Scan Speak. The silk dome tweeter is driven by six neodymium magnets arranged in a circle and should extend the speaker’s bandwidth into unbelievable 60kHz. The midrange driver incorporates a paper cone that is cut and reinforced by spiraling grooves in the typical Scan Speak fashion. So far so good - natural silk, natural wood, natural paper. Now, the twin woofers are made of aluminum to achieve a good proportion between mass, rigidity and speed, consequently resulting into slam and authority. Sony says.

The tonal balance of the SS-AR1 speakers favors an inviting and embracing style of reproduction. To me this was particularly surprising in bottom octaves for I had expected completely opposite, perhaps due to aluminum woofers. As experienced with the Shostakovich’s Allegro 9 January (London Symphony Orchestra - Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony #11, The Year 1905) the strokes of big drums were martially forceful, dynamic and thundering, yet very well resolved and appropriately tuneful. There was no metallic sheen in upper harmonies that I had expected.

I would not say that the SS-AR1s are warm speakers, in fact to my ears they exhibit more neutral balance than the Revels, but there is something in their sound that gives you that impression. Nevertheless, the bass of the Sonys is very powerful and contoured and I never felt that I should challenge the specified 27Hz of the Sonys‘ specified bottom extension. I checked Kalman Rubinson’s review of the SS-AR1 for Stereophile that was very thoughtfully written. Unlike him I did not experience similar issues with the inappropriate tonal balance, neither any sonic signature that he observed with his McIntosh amplifier. I suspect the McIntosh to be the component that brings the signature in. Paired with the Mark Levinson No.432, which I admit is on a bit cold side of tonality, I was constantly receiving rich and organic sound that was nicely resolved, yet quite understated in a typical elegant Japanese fashion. To those who cherish classical music this particular tonality suits well, transporting them to the comfort of concert halls. I completely agree with Stereophile, however, that you need to choose the right loudness level. With the volume going down the sound was losing its spark and drive. Therefore, should you are a night listener the SS-AR1 may not be for you. At realistic volumes everything snaps together and the speakers show exemplary behavior across their entire frequency response.

There is nothing like an integration issue between the drivers. The highs are clean, smooth and extended and blend well with the midrange that is informative, full and very engaging. Comparing the Sonys directly to my Revels revealed slightly more powerful bass of the SS-AR1s, that was not necessarily slower or faster, just perhaps more tuneful and timbrally accurate. Depending on the source material I preferred highs of the Revel that had more openness and spark and stayed like that down to the lowest listening levels. However, in case of some more aggressively recorded material, like my period rock recordings I favored the Sony’s more understated voicing that helped to cure the recording issues. It is not like the SS-AR1s mutes or obscures the detail, not at all, the Scan Speak tweeters are too good for that, rather it does not overemphasize. For some it results into a slight loss of spark, for others it results into better integration of individual events in the music.

In July 1969 Neil Armstrong & Co landed on the Moon. After successfully completing the mission of Apollo 11 program he stepped out of the module on the lunar surface with famous words "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Sony SS-AR1 speakers are not unlike the Apollo program – lots of technology, lots of passion and lots of money. At the end, the result that could have been stellar turns out to be just great. For any other company it is satisfactory enough, for Sony - I feel - it comes a little short.
